Liberal Democrats strongly oppose the use of the former Royal Mint site as a location for the new Chinese ‘super-embassy’. It is a misuse of a historical site, poses a risk to national security and could lead to disruption due to increased protests and demonstrations against the authoritarian Chinese government.

Tower Hamlets Council rightly rejected these plans, twice. First in 2022, and again, unanimously, in December 2024. The power to make this decision has since been taken out of local hands by the Labour government. At the time of writing, a final verdict is currently expected by 10th December.

We believe this government must not go against the will of our local councillors on this matter, especially due to the increased risks this poses to Hong Kongers living in the UK.

Seb and Guy, our local party candidates are actively discussing this matter with Luke and strongly support his campaigning on it.
