Rough sleeping up by a third since 2015

Commenting on reports today released by the government that show that rough sleeping has risen by a third since 2015, a Liberal Democrat spokesperson said

“The homelessness figures revealed today show that the situation is spiralling out of control. In the last two years we have seen the number of rough sleepers sky rocket by one third.

“It is a bitter irony that the highest number of rough sleepers in the country is in Westminster, right next to the government who have the power to stop the homelessness epidemic.

“The government must ensure that all local authorities have what they need to tackle this problem with at least one provider of the Housing First model of provision for long-term, entrenched homeless people.”

Housing and homelessness are considerable problems in Tower Hamlets. In January Councillor Andrew Cregan called for the Council to use its powers to bring empty homes into use - and this is one of our key pledges heading into May's local elections.
