Liberal Democrats demand Peer Review to tackle Labour’s failing Children’s Services

Ofsted-logo.jpgA damning report from Ofsted released today shows that children most at risk of harm are being failed by the local Labour Council. Children’s services and safeguarding were rated inadequate overall, with particular concern expressed that “Insufficient scrutiny by the chief executive, the Director of Children’s Services (DCS) and politicians has meant that they did not know about the extent of the failures to protect children until this inspection.”

Elaine Bagshaw, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Poplar & Limehouse, said "This is an utterly damning report on the state of local children’s services. The children and families most in need of help and support have been failed by the local Labour Council and Lutfur Rahman’s previous administration.

It is clear from today’s report that there needs to be an urgent and thorough review of the service, and serious questions asked of the leadership. Today I am calling on the Mayor to urgently publish his plan for addressing the report’s fifteen recommendations, and to take immediate action to make sure our children are protected when they are in our care.

Liberal Democrats are calling on the Council to establish independent peer review boards to work with Children's Services and the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) to ensure that these failures in governance are tackled quickly and effectively."
