In Tower Hamlets, we feel a special pride that one of the foundations of the Liberal Democrats took place right here with the Limehouse Declaration, when Shirley Williams, Bill Rogers, Roy Jenkins and Dr David Owen broke with the Labour Party to found the SDP.
To celebrate this important milestone, we’re getting together with our friends from Your Liberal Britain, to bring you:
“YOUR LIMEHOUSE DECLARATION”
What would YOU say in a new Limehouse Declaration today?
It’s not just history, it’s incredibly topical.
The Thatcherite Tories were tearing the country apart but the disciples of Tony Benn had seized control of the Labour Party with an unelectable leader, a hard left agenda, and a rejection of membership of Europe…
Liberals and Social Democrats had to come together to make a difference.
Here’s some of what they said:
“Our intention is to rally all those who are committed to the values, principles and policies of social democracy. We seek to reverse Britain’s economic decline. We want to create an open, classless and more equal society, one which rejects ugly prejudices based upon sex, race or religion.”
“We do not believe in the politics of an inert centre merely representing the lowest common denominator between two extremes. We want more, not less, radical change in our society…”
“Britain needs to recover its self-confidence and be outward-looking, rather than isolationist, xenophobic or neutralist.”
It’s even more relevant and important today.
(and you can read the full document here: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Limehouse_Declaration)
We want to hear the ideas that today’s Lib Dems would put in if we were to draft our own Declaration, telling people they have a real choice beyond Tories and Labour.
So join us, and tell us what kind of society you want to build; what improvements would it bring to people’s lives; and why a Britain that’s being failed by hard right and old left needs a new politics.
