Forging ahead

One of the Island's great industrial heritage buildings has secured a new lease of life. After more than 40 years in Clerkenwell, Craft Central - a leading arts and crafts charity supporting over 700 designer-makers - have decided to make a new home at The Forge on Westferry Road, signing a 20 year lease. Craft Central celebrated their official opening at The Forge on September 28th, where it now provides 67 creative studios and shared workspace, with exhibitors in ceramics, glass, textiles, jewellery and furniture.

New research by the LSE's Centre for Economic Performance and the Liberal Democrats has revealed just how damaging a no deal Brexit will be to Tower Hamlets.

A no deal Brexit will mean an economic hit of £11.59 billion to Tower Hamlets.  

David Davis and other members of the cabinet have recently been talking up a no deal Brexit, but this data shows that the country simply couldn't afford it.

Tower Hamlets failing to effectively tackle rogue landlords

Tower Hamlets is still failing to effectively deal with rogue landlords, with only 7 prosecutions in 2016/17 and compared to 331 in next door Newham. 

Despite setting up a Landlord Licensing Scheme, very little is being done to tackle rogue landlords in our borough.

Lib Dems call for 12.5% business rates cap to protect pubs in Tower Hamlets

The Liberal Democrats have called on the government to permanently protect local pubs from crippling tax hikes by introducing a 12.5% cap on business rate increases.

It comes as figures show that 53 local pubs have so far received funding from the government's relief scheme, with a total of £90,077 handed out.

Less than 2% of council homes sold in Tower Hamlets since 2015 replaced

Only 8 council homes in Tower Hamlets sold off under Right to Buy have been replaced since 2015, analysis by the Liberal Democrats has revealed.

The party is calling on the government to reform Right to Buy and ensure all affordable homes sold are replaced.

In total 453 council homes in Tower Hamlets have been sold off since April 2015, official figures show, while just 8 have been built under the government's replacement scheme.
