The Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats have condemned Jim Fitzpatrick MP’s support for a No Deal Brexit in the House of Commons on Weds 27th February. The Labour MP for Poplar & Limehouse was one of only 7 Labour MPs to vote against an SNP amendment to Theresa May’s Brexit bill which would have taken the possibility of a No Deal Brexit off the table.
Elaine Bagshaw, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Poplar & Limehouse said:
“It is incredible that Jim Fitzpatrick has decided to vote this way, only weeks after the council issued a report on the amount of damage that any kind of Brexit would cause to the people and economy of Tower Hamlets. Despite being a remain voter in a remain voting constituency, Jim has consistently voted for pro-Brexit legislation and it is appalling to see a Labour MP now siding with the far right of the Tory party in supporting No Deal Brexit. No Deal would wreak havoc in Poplar and Limehouse and across the UK. Jim has betrayed his constituents and it is time local people had a voice that listens to them. The Liberal Democrats demand better for Poplar and Limehouse.”
Councillor Rabina Khan said:
“Even the Council has finally realised how much damage Brexit would do to Tower Hamlets, after months Liberal Democrat campaigning for action. It is 2 years since I submitted a motion to Council for a Brexit Working Group and the Biggs Labour administration did not want to hear it. By supporting a No Deal Brexit Jim Fitzpatrick now appears to be in opposition even to his local Labour party. It is time for fresh representation in Poplar & Limehouse.”
