The Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats have welcomed the national Liberal Democrat party’s adoption of a new standard definition of Islamophobia produced by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims. The Liberal Democrats are the first national party to adopt the standard.
The decision to adopt the standard was announced in Parliament by Ed Davey MP as part of a question about the Government’s commitment to responding to Islamophobia. It is supported by both the Liberal Democrat Campaign for Racial Equality and the party’s newly appointed Vice President BaME Isabelle Parasram.
Councillor Rabina Khan said:
“My heart has been broken by the terrorist attack in Christchurch last week. In a time of rising hatred against Muslims across the world it is so important to see national organisations like the Liberal Democrats leading the way by adopting the new standard definition of Islamophobia. We need to take a stand against all discriminatory behaviour and dialogue, and show the Muslim community that the political mainstream is behind them and wants to defeat Islamophobia and Muslim hatred.”
Councillor Khan also appeared on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on March 19th to speak about the terrorist attack on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand last week. She said:
“[New Zealand Prime Minister] Jacinda Ardern has given hope to Muslims around the world. On Sunday my mum rang me and she sent me a photo of a bouquet left at the mosque in Chatham. The note said: “We stand with you. We share your loss”. Those acts of kindness send a huge message. We have to look to hope and faith and to come together, and it’s that togetherness that we must instill today.”
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for British Muslims tweeted:
“It is great to see the @LibDems have taken practical steps to tackle the scourge of Islamophobia by adopting [our] definition”
Elaine Bagshaw, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Poplar & Limehouse said:
“The Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats fully support the adoption of the new standard definition of Islamophobia and intend to implement it in full. I am immensely proud that we are the first national party to treat this issue seriously, and urge the Conservatives and Labour to follow our lead as soon as possible.
Like all decent people I have been horrified at the terrorist attack in Christchurch and the rise of the far right and white supremacism across the world. It is vital that we loudly restate our liberal values of inclusion and respect and take action such as this to make them a reality. We will continue to work with and support the Muslim community in Tower Hamlets and elsewhere in any way we can.”
